The Ancients recognized four basic elements: Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.
These four elements are still recognized in ritual magic. And it makes perfect sense that, because all things are interconnected, the elements work together toward common purposes.
But for now, let’s focus on each elements individual traits, as opposed to the seemingly infinite ways you can use them in combination with one another.
For this post we will turn our attention toward Air …
Air is the only element that is ever-present. There is never a moment, throughout our entire lives, where He is not with us. He is always there. And our existence is dependent on His faithful presence. He literally carries the breath of life.
His areas of power are communication, intelligence, knowledge, and dreams. In fact, He governs all mental activity.
He has charge over all movement, and is associated with travel, freedom, imagination, and discovery.
Use Air to carry positive thoughts to those far away, to blow away strife, and to carry away troubles.
Altar representations of this element should be on the east side, as this is the direction He is connected with.
He can be aptly represented by many objects. Feathers, incense, and wands are all great choices. He can also be represented by the colors yellow or white. Color is a great way to represent Him when you find yourself away from your altar and/or magical supplies.
I find myself particularly drawn to rendezvousing with Him in places where He manifests in the form of wind. There is something innately powerful about standing with your face toward the wind. It is reviving to feel Him rush over your face and blow your hair backward.
As one who practices magic it is paramount to stay connected to the energy which surrounds you; making it invaluable to work with the four elements. We have the great fortune of joining forces with Nature and using the power created by this union to manifest our needs and desires.
I encourage you to become close friends with Air. Get to know Him. Talk to Him. Listen to Him. Work together with Him to manifest the life of your dreams.
It is my opinion that the best way to get to know an element, in this case Air, is to dedicate a 30 day block to the task. On each one of these days engage in an activity which exposes you to the element. Experience it fully. Journal your experience, particularly any insights it provides for you while you 'dance together'.
Here are a few ideas for ways to spend time with Air to get you started …
- Sit outside on a windy, stormy day and observe how He affects the world
- Sit outside on a quiet, still day and observe how He affects the world
- Mindfully breathe; contemplating the necessity of Air
- Close all windows and doors to your home and feel the atmosphere
- Open all windows and doors to your home and feel the atmosphere
I have no doubt that you will experience exponential growth from your 30 day journey with Air.
He is consistent. He is faithful. He is ever-present. He is a life-giver.
Hold this amazing element in reverence my lovely Tribe! He will serve you well. He is one of our faithful Ancient Allies!
