I simply cannot imagine a Witches cabinet that does not have at least one jar of black salt among its wares. It is a staple in my cabinet, for sure!
I love the process of making this magical tool. It’s always pretty gratifying to create your own tools 😉
You will find black lava salt and Himalayan black salt readily available for purchase in specialty cuisine shops. And there is no doubt that they too will work for your magical practice, as salt in any form is a very valuable asset for a Witch.
I, personally, have never looked at the properties these salts possess. So I couldn’t say how they would best serve a Witches practice. I do know they are ‘good eats’! If that counts for anything 😉
BUT back to the subject at hand …
Black salt made by your own hands, for your own magical workings! Powerful stuff!
This tool is just what you need when working with protection spells, banishing spells, hex breaking spells, and removal of unwanted influences in your life.
If there is something (really just about anything) you want to drive away … black salt is your friend.
Use it to ward off negativity, depression, sickness, undesirable entities, and even unwanted guests.
You get the idea, right?
If you do some research on this handy tool you will find that it is often used in branches of the Craft which support dark magic. It is considered by some to be a useful agent when casting a spell intended to curse its subject.
But please don’t allow this fact to deter you from creating and using this very valuable magical tool in your own practice.
It is, after all, the intention of the user which determines the result of a spell and not the tool being used. And this tool is a powerful one Witches! When it is created in a positive fashion and infused with pure intent it can be used to produce impressive change.
Let’s take a brief look at a few ways to incorporate its use into your daily life …
Sprinkle it outside the thresholds of your home to prevent anything unwanted from entering there.
Place a bit in a small bag and put it in your home or workplace to absorb all discord, bickering, and gossip.
Toss some under your bed, or the bed of your littles, to ward off nightmares.
Throw a few pinches behind a guest in your home to cause them to leave quickly.
Sprinkle a bit in the footprints of those who ‘ruffle your feathers’ to make them take leave of your space. This will likely cause them to leave long term. So use this tip only after careful consideration of the end result.
Black salt is simple to make. If you have a mortar and pestle to work with that will make it a bit easier for you. But don’t let the lack of one keep you from partaking in the magical experience of creating this helpful Witches ally. Just use a food processor or a spice grinder instead 😉
I like to clear the space I’ll be working in and set my intentions there. All magic is better when this is a prelude to it's working.
I also often burn a candle near my work space. You can choose a color that corresponds with your intent if you like. I tend to stick to either a white or black candle. Black when I am preparing a blend to be used for removing negativity, banishing, and the like. White for all other preparations, as white boosts the power of your intention and also of the ingredients you are working with. Often I use both colors with the intent of the white candle working as a booster for the black candle..
Next gather your ingredients …
Sea salt or some other form of this mineral (preferably a pure form)
Ashes from a fire (preferably one burned with an intention that matches your goal)
A pinch of black pepper (this ingredient is a matter of preference)
Note: If you cannot get your hands on ashes from a fire, don’t fret! Use some charcoal powder or the ashes which remain from an incense cone after it has been burned. After all, sometimes a Witch must improvise 😉 If it is charcoal powder you choose be certain you store your salt in an airtight container as it will be sensitive to humidity.
Once you’ve gathered your ingredients purify them before you take them into your already cleansed work space. It will save time, and work just as well, if you get your work space ready and gather your ingredients first, and then cleanse everything together. I just enjoy the process of blessing each ingredient individually and carrying it into my pre-prepped space.
Stir your ashes and black pepper together and pour them in your mortar and pestle. Slowly add your salt as you grind all of your ingredients together. Pour your intention into the mix as you go. If it is easier for you, use a chant that you have prepared ahead of time. Or if one comes to you as you’re working, even BETTER!
Do not add so much salt that your mix starts to become too light. Black salt should be, well, black!
I have created black salt from many different sources. BUT my very favorites are made with the ashes claimed from holiday fires. These fires are powerful and carry the 'Spirit' of the holiday with them.
Here’s a handy reference list to give you an idea of what purposes each holidays ashes serve …
Samhain ~ Divination, Connecting with the Other World, Honor, and Abundance
Mabon ~ Harmony, Balance, Reflection, and Rest
Yule ~ Deep Introspection, Hope, Rebirth, and Gratitude
Imbolc ~ Purification, Creativity, Light, and Reaffirmation
Ostara ~ Fertility, Balance, Potential, and Interconnectedness
Beltane ~ Sexuality, Union, Purification, and Connecting with the Other World
Litha ~ Achievement, Blessing, Strength, and Power
