Here we are Witches on the day after Yule. We have acknowledged another turn of the wheel. This turn took us into a new season. Winter is upon us. Our next celebration will be Imbolc. But we will not enter another season until we reach Ostara. She will escort us into spring.
It has been my experience that most people are not very fond of Old Man Winter. I am not among them. I have a deep-seeded love for winter. I’m not particularly fond of the cold, that’s true. But I love the coziness that a warm house provides in the midst of a raging snow storm.
I have always considered my home a restorative haven. It is the place where I escape the world and rejuvenate. Somehow, in the winter it is even more so. I suppose it is the whole ‘shelter from the storm’ thing ❤️❄️😉❄️❤️
So bring on the fluffy pj’s, the warm slippers, the hot cocoa, the nourishing soup, the long candlelit baths, the early evening movies, and the ‘can’t put ‘em down’ books. I’m ready!
All of these things are food for my soul.
But even more important than those things, winter beckons us to …
Turn inward and examine ourselves on a deeper level. A level that we don’t quite seem to be able to reach in other seasons.
Winter calls us to examine our core being. He slows the world down, providing us with the time we need, to do the spiritual work necessary, to altar the characteristics we find there which are undesirable to us. And to foster the qualities we need to push us closer to self-actualization.
One of the tools I use to assist me in this work is my book of shadows. Working on with this written record of my journey, always provides me with very valuable insight. The kind of life-changing information that spurs self-growth.
This winter, I have gathered a list of prompts for this work. I feel like having them readily available to me will help me stay on task with my inward journey. Some are directly related to my personal evolution and others do not seem to be. At least not right now. But somehow the Goddess always uses each and every one of them to foster my expansion. She is faithful like that 😉
I’d like to share them with all of you …
So that you too can be inspired to spend some quality time this winter working on your book of shadows.
Here they are Witches …
11 prompts to inspire you to spend time expanding your book of shadows this winter …
Our Sun is gaining strength, what would you like to see gain strength in your life this season? What can you physically do to make it happen? What can you magically do to make it happen?
Choose 3 herbs associated with the winter season, research them, and record your findings. Work with each one magically and record both your process and your results. Frankincense, myrrh, and mistletoe are all great choices.
Choose 3 crystals associated with the winter season, research them, and record your findings. Work with each one magically and record both your process and your results. Clear quartz, selenite, and snowflake obsidian are all great choices.
Write out your 3 favorite winter recipes. Research and record the magical properties of their ingredients. Then make them and contemplate their power as you eat them. Again, record your results.
Make note of the new and full moon phases and when they will occur between now and Ostara. Design a ritual to perform on each of these phases, to attain a life goal you wish to reach by that time in the winter season. Perform the rituals. Record the emotions you experience during the rituals and also any insights you receive.
Choose 2 or 3 areas of your life where you struggle with negative emotions; such as, rejection, insecurity, or shame. Sit with each of them for several moments and allow yourself to feel the emotions they raise. Strive to uncover a positive way to turn the situations which cause these emotions around. Record these strategies and how you plan to use them in the future to bring healing to these areas.
Write about your relationship to winter. How do you feel about this season? What were your thoughts and emotions as you considered its approach? And what are your thoughts and emotions as you consider its duration? As well as its departure?
Write a love letter to a snowflake (this needs no further explanation ❤️❄️❤️).
Describe winter as though it were a human being. What is this ‘person’ like? How does it dress? What is the color and style of its hair? What are its habits? What does it eat? What are its hobbies? What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses? How does it see itself? How do others see it? Who are its friends? What are they like? Who are its family members? What are they like?
Pick 2 ways that you can bond with each of the 4 elements throughout this season. Such as, bonding with water by turning your face toward the falling snow and feeling the snowflakes as they hit your face and melt. Record your experiences.
Choose 3 scents that remind you of winter and note how they make you feel.
